Blog Post #4

Last week we discussed what makes a reader engaged or unengaged. I asked you to explain some things you can do that will help you be a better reader. This week, we are going to continue on the path of discussion about reading by answering another self-reflection question.

The initial question: What are some strategies good readers use to help them better understand a text? To answer this question, you must consider a few other sub-questions. Reflect on these: 1) When you read, are you asking questions, such as What's going to happen next? or How does that character feel at the moment? 2) When you read, do you make inferences, or predictions, about the text? 3) When you read, do you empathize or sympathize with the characters in the story? In other words, can you see things from their point of view? 4) When you read, do you choose something that is of personal interest to you? In other words, do you select books that you can relate to or that are about things you enjoy?

By answering the questions above, you are reflecting on how you read and why you understand certain texts better than others. These questions also help you understand why you may or may not like reading in general. I mentioned last week that I believe there is a book out there for everyone, so find that special book that you can relate to and enjoy.

Answer the initial question and sub-questions in 4 complete, thoughtful sentences. Once again, remember I am asking you to think deeply on this topic. I expect your responses to be true to you, insightful, and meaningful. Anything less than 4 sentences that fit those three requirements is not going to earn you a 4 when it comes to grades.

  1. I do ask the those qustion to make me curious of what is going to happen next in the story,or if I don't like it I don't answer those qustions. Also I do make inferences on the story if I am on a test and answering the qustion. No I don't empathize to the characters in the story because I don't like when I empathize.Yes I do most of the time interest in most of the books like I read them before I look at them.

  6. When I read I ask myself questions as to what will happen or is this person responsible. As I read I get the answers that I am looking for. I like books that catch my attention in the beginning or else I will not continue to read it. If a friend and I are reading the same book we ask questions to see If we will come to the same conclusion.

  8. Some strategies are monitoring comprehension, recognizing story structure and summaring. When I read I ask myself what is the main idea. When I read I do not predict the text. I can feel peoples pain. When I pick a book to read it is because a friend told me it is a good book to read.

  9. Well good readers would read the context and stuff to better understand it because if they don't get a word or sentence then those context clues would help. And yes I do all of the first 3 sub questions except number 4 because I really don't care what I read as long as it's at my reading level and it's appropriate.

  10. I always ask those questions. To me the questions that we ask ourselves are important. They make the book more interesting. Asking questions is important, because if you didn't the story wouldn't make much sense.

  11. When I am reading a book, I often ask myself what's going to happen next. I like to let my imagination take over. Once I'm into a book, I wonder how it will end. I enjoy reading books that appeal to me or that I can relate to.

  12. When I read books I sometimes do find myself asking, whats going to happen. What is the character going to do next. I also do guess what is going to happen next. By doing that I find myself more interested in the book and the story. The more that I read, I start to find out what books that I do like to read. I didn't like to read, but I've learned that there are different books out there to read that I do like. I do let my mind take me places in the book as if I am the character I'm reading about.

Yes, I do empathize. I can see the characters point of view its more fun to look at thing from their side.
I can also understand it better when I do.
In diary of a wimpy kid I see Greg’s point of view being a not so popular kid in school telling his stoy in school
He is a kid who really the diary is based on his point of view and telling what his daily challenges are.

  14. yes, sometimes i do ask these to get to know the book better and i do infer and predict 1 thing I always do is use my backround knowledge to understand more. The one way see things in their point of view is visualize the book as a movie. In my old town we had a wall of strategies called CAFE C=comprehension A=accuracy F=fluency E=expanded reading. thats all my strategies so far and i'm tryng to work harder to be a better reader and expand my reading.
